Sunrise Hill Running for Motivation

 

At the beginning of the summer a few of us were feeling un-motivated to train outside in Dubai’s unbearable heat and high humidity with temperatures up in the 40’s. The thought of training on the treadmill was just as bad so a few of us decided to head to the hills. There aren’t many hills in Dubai but we found a couple at The Gardens, near to Ibn Batutta Shopping Mall. There are some short, off road trails nearby as well, which can be used for shorter intervals. We usually run for 1 hour and include an interval or tempo run using the hill. Somehow despite the the heat we managed to complete the sessions and even improved our fitness throughout the summer.

This weeks session was a 60 minute run, with 6 x 2 minutes up the hill followed by 4 x 1 minute up the hill. The sessions are tough but are great for improving strength, speed and endurance. We do different sessions each week, such as a 20 minutes tempo run using the hill, then 4 x 2 minutes up the hill, followed by 10 minutes hard using the hill at the end. The sessions are fun, but hard work and helped to keen us motivated during Dubai’s hot and humid summer!!

As the cooler temperatures arrive we will continue the sessions and have a few off road hill-trail sessions and longer runs planned a little further away at Showkra.
